A thousand-year-old castle at the heart of Ardennes history
The origins of Château de La Roche-en-Ardenne date back to the IXᵉ century, although the site was occupied long before that, in Celtic and then Roman times. Its strategic position, on a naturally defensive hill, made it an essential control point for the region’s trade routes.
Over the centuries, the fortress passed through the hands of great noble families, was transformed, enlarged and adapted to military developments. During the reign of Louis XIV, it was even redesigned to withstand modern artillery. Abandoned in the XVIIIᵉ century, the château gradually fell into ruin… but still retains a majestic presence today.

Good news – the castle is open to the public. Open to the public for most of the year, it can be discovered on a leisurely stroll through its ramparts, towers and remains, with the added bonus of a breathtaking view over the Ourthe valley. Allow around 45 minutes to walk around it and enjoy the panorama.
The site also cultivates a mysterious aura. Legend has it that the ghost of Countess Berthe still haunts the ruins after dark. In season, medieval events, falconry shows and themed tours enhance the immersion, for an experience halfway between living history and the thrill of the chase.
