Fans of architecture and fantastic stories are in for a treat. Often overlooked by the general public, the Hôtel Frison is the next address to discover in Brussels. Right in the heart of the chic Sablon district stands a building designed by the hand of master architect Victor Horta. Built in 1894 for his friend, lawyer Maurice Frison, it was the architect’s second house in Brussels.
After a long period of neglect, the Art Nouveau building has undergone an unexpected renaissance. Thanks to the providential intervention of an art-loving Indian princess, Nupur Tron, this jewel on Rue Lebeau has been restored to its original splendor. We take you on a tour of this veritable time capsule, which tells the story of over a century of Brussels history and culture.
Hôtel Frison, an Art Nouveau jewel in the heart of Brussels’ Sablon district
The Hôtel Frison is a major work of Art Nouveau architecture in Brussels. Victor Horta put all his creative genius into it. For those lucky enough to walk past it, the first thing to notice is its elegant limestone façade. Then, in keeping with the spirit of the time, natural light is everywhere, especially in the Winter Garden. Playing with space, Horta added a monumental staircase that spans eight different levels.

In true Art Nouveau style, the building also features frescoes and murals depicting flora and fauna. As for the ironwork on the staircase, it’s breathtaking and typical of the famous Horta curve. If you’re lucky enough to visit, you’ll see that this building perfectly embodies the architectural aspirations of the 19th century.
An Art Nouveau architectural gem saved by an Indian princess
The story of the Hôtel Frison is worthy of a novel. Unoccupied for 18 years, this historic building was in a very poor state of repair. Fortunately, in 2017, it was discovered by an Indian jewelry designer. Luckily, Nupur Tron, daughter of a Rajasthani prince, immediately fell in love with this abandoned mansion. But why such love at first sight? The designer saw a strong connection between Art Nouveau and her Indian roots.

After numerous investments and ongoing renovation work, her acquisition led to a fine restoration of the property. Today, the hotel is home to the Frison Horta Foundation. This cultural institution works to preserve and share this incredible heritage. The Foundation regularly organizes themed guided tours (€39 per visit), which are available by appointment only. In this way, this Art Nouveau treasure lives on. Ready for your next architectural discovery in Brussels?
