For years, it was one of the main gateways to Brussels. Today , the final stretch of the A12 has been completely transformed. Inaugurated last weekend, the new Parkway transforms three kilometers of roadway into an urban boulevard where the focus is now on pedestrians, cyclists… and nature.
Three kilometers completely redesigned
Between the Van Praet Bridge and the regional border, the landscape bears little resemblance to that of a highway. A wide bike and pedestrian path now runs through the site. It is dotted with new green spaces, relaxation areas, and an impressive 42-meter footbridge that allows pedestrians to cross the A12 without encountering a single car. In total, nearly 16,000 m² have been landscaped, and 147 trees are reshaping this entrance to the city. The project, representing an investment of 11.5 million euros, also aims to better prepare Brussels for heat waves. This is achieved through increased vegetation and infrastructure capable of collecting rainwater.
A new space to enjoy all summer long
Beyond the change in scenery, this redevelopment also aims to improve residents’ daily lives. According to Brussels Mobility, initial measurements already show a significant reduction in noise pollution for nearby residents. And to encourage Brussels residents to embrace this new space, the summer program promises to be packed with activities. Bike rides, rollerblading workshops, outdoor yoga classes, family-friendly events, local heritage tours, and food trucks will take place throughout the summer. It’s a wonderful opportunity to discover this new side of northern Brussels… and to see how a former highway can become a vibrant community space.
