The Neo-Gothic heritage of Château de Zellaer
Although the Château de Zellaer, or Kasteel van Zellaer, traces its origins to the 13th century under the patronage of the Lord of Mechelen, the building is the result of a spectacular renaissance in the late 19th century. In 1836, the estate passed to the family of Baron Gustave de Vrière, who, faced with the castle’s ruins, decided to tear it down and rebuild a sumptuous residence on the original medieval foundations between 1888 and 1892.

Architecturally, Zellaer is a manifesto of the Neo-Gothic style, a trend very much in vogue in Belgium that reinterprets medieval forms using modern 19th-century techniques. Built of white sandstone, the castle also draws inspiration from the magnificent palaces of the Loire Valley. Ornate masonry, soaring ceilings, and vast stained-glass windows—every detail reflects a unified aesthetic vision. A deliberate blend of tradition and modernity has created a harmonious building, transforming the site into a jewel of Flemish heritage.
The family estate, where flavors and prestige meet
Today, Château de Zellaer has been transformed into a true gem where young and old alike come to escape. The site buzzes with uniquesensory experiences, starting with its luxurious breakfast buffet served in the building’s most prestigious salons. As soon as the warm weather arrives, the excitement shifts to the summer bar: a fantastic setting with a view of the neo-Gothic facades, inviting you to relax with a delicious cocktail or a variety of tapas.

But Zellaer’s soul also lies in its playful approach to heritage. The interactive exhibition “The Fox and the Hare” transforms the historic rooms into a unique playground of adventure. This energy carries over into landmark events like the SecretZ festival, where melodies get the crowds dancing under the setting sun. Whether strolling through the gardens or hosting a private reception, Zellaer succeeds in making prestige accessible, offering a respite where every moment becomes a celebration.
