In the heart of Brussels, an iconic landmark is set to tantalize the capital’s taste buds. A true historical cradle, the Saint-Géry Market Halls are opening a new chapter in their rich urban history. A captivating journey awaits the people of Brussels through the fascinating past of this architectural gem from 1881, which houses the last open-air remnant of the Senne River. The adventure continues with the return of its popular DNA: the highly anticipated opening, on June 16, of a large gourmet and artisanal market. By reconnecting with its culinary roots through ten local stalls, this cultural temple is reinventing itself to celebrate legendary Belgian craftsmanship.
Les Halles Saint-Géry: the epic story of a unique urban marketplace
It was onthe Îlot Saint-Géry, at the center of the islands formed by the branches of the Senne, that a Gothic church once stood, demolished under the French Regime. In 1881, the site was transformed under the guidance ofarchitect Vanderheggen into the Halles Saint-Géry, an architectural masterpiece combining a Flemish Neo-Renaissance exterior with a bold metal interior structure. Even today, the building’s basement proudly houses the last open-air remnant of the Senne River within the Pentagone.

After pulsing for nearly a century to the rhythm of market gardeners and stalls, the Saint-Géry Market fell out of favor with merchants after World War II, eventually closing its doors for good in 1977. Saved from demolition thanks to its designation as a heritage site in 1987, the monument began a second life in the late 1990s. Under the auspices of the Brussels-Capital Region, the space was transformed into a free exhibition center open to all, establishing itself as the guardian of the capital’s urban identity.
A new chapter in gourmet delights: when Brussels’ heritage comes back to life
Today, the Halles Saint-Géry are preparing to return to their original purpose. Starting Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the ground floor of this iconic monument will once again come alive with the energy of an authentic artisanal and gourmet market—a bold project aimed at revivingthe venue’s commercial and popular spirit without compromising its cultural richness. Artistic projects and exhibitions will thus coexist with this new living space, creating a unique dialogue between architectural heritage and contemporary conviviality.

From Tuesday to Sunday, a dozen passionate artisans and merchants will bringthe local culinary identity to life. Whether shopping at the butcher, fishmonger, or greengrocer, strolling among the stalls, or sitting down for a tasting, the experience invites you to savor the moment. Among the highlights already announced, food lovers will find the famous Kāfēi coffee shop, the comfort food of Bouillon, and the delicious hot dogs from Franky. A must-visit stop between Place Sainte-Catherine and the Grand Place to celebrate Brussels’ culinary expertise.
