The Mirror of Hesbaye: The Crazy Story of Het Vinne

Born from a landslide duringthe Ice Age, this gem nestled on the eastern edge of Zoutleeuw long held the title of the only natural inland lake in all of Flanders. For centuries, this vast 100-hectare expanse of water reigned supreme over the Petite Gette valley. But in 1841, the great body of water was abruptly drained and transformed into meadows, only to see its fate change again in 1930 when a company decided to plant a massive forest of Canadian poplars there.
It wasn’t until the late 1990s that the province of Flemish Brabant made a historic decision: to erase the traces ofhuman exploitation and restore nature to its freedom. After meticulous scientific studies, this ecological restoration project was completed in 2005. The floodgates were reopened, the farmland flooded, and the lake instantly reclaimed its rightful place. Today, this natural depression has become an essential sanctuary of biodiversity, unique in Europe, where local flora and fauna are once again thriving in complete tranquility.
