Nestled in a wild valley of the Ourthe River, Lake Nisramont stands out as a natural gem of the Province of Luxembourg. Beyond its idyllic setting and impressive dam, the lake is a true playground for adventurers. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a water sports enthusiast, Nisramont promises a complete immersion less than two hours from Brussels. From the tranquil power of the current to the athletic challenges of the terrain, set off on an unforgettable getaway in the heart of the Ardennes.
Lake Nisramont: the Ardennes with a touch of Canada
Nestled in a wooded valley, this artificial lake, created at the confluence of the Eastern and Western Ourthe rivers, offers a striking scene. Between the spruce forests reflected in the crystal-clear waters and the absolute calm that reigns, Nisramont reveals a unique natural setting. With its resemblance to a vast Canadian lake and its boreal atmosphere, the Belgian Ardennes offer here a peaceful, wild, and majestic refuge, far fromthe hustle and bustle of the city.

The site also owes its existence to the Nisramont Dam, a concrete wall built between 1953 and 1958. 116 meters long and 16 meters high, it holds up to 3 million cubic meters of water to supply the region with drinking water and has completely transformed the valley into a protected ecological sanctuary. As you take in the panorama from the overlook at the confluence, you immediately sense the delicate balance between human ambition and the raw power of the Ardennes’ nature, symbolized by this jewel of biodiversity.
Water activities and rugged trails: an outdoor adventure
Stretching 14 kilometers, the lake trail follows the meandering water through a dense, rolling forest. The route, surprising for its steep slopes and technical sections, offers breathtaking views, set among moss-covered cliffs, stone staircases, and wooden footbridges. A unique wilderness experience that also features three mountain bike trails, winding through the woods and offering spectacular views of the Ourthe Valley.

For water sports enthusiasts, the pristine waters guarantee absolute tranquility, ideal for kayaking or paddleboarding on the lake’s gentle waves. Anglers aren’t left out either, as Nisramont is renowned for its game fish—provided, of course, that you practice“catch-and-release”to preserve this precious ecosystem. After your adventure, stop by the dam tavern to recharge, while just a few kilometers away, Maboge Beach welcomes visitors for a refreshing break.
