Built in 1354 by Renaud de Waimes, Reinhardstein Castle has had an eventfulhistory . Passed down through several noble families, it was gradually abandoned before falling into ruin in the 19th century. For decades, only its stones, overgrown with vegetation, bore witness to its former grandeur.
It was not until the 1960s that an enthusiast, Professor Jean Overloop, undertook an extraordinary restoration. Stone by stone, the castle was rebuilt using medieval techniques, based on historical documents and architectural comparisons. Today, Reinhardstein is one of the few Belgian castles to offer such an authenticatmosphere , far removed from overly modern reconstructions.
A medieval immersion between forest and waterfall
Visits to the castle are at fixed times, offering a real immersion in medieval life. Guard room, chapel, stately apartments, knights’ hall… each room is furnished and decorated with period objects, including armor, tapestries, and antique furniture.
But the experience doesn’t end at the castle walls. A few minutes’ walk away, a forest path leads to theReinhardstein waterfall, the highest in Belgium at nearly 60 meters!
