Looking foranautumn getaway just a short drive from Brussels? Nestled in a lush valley in northern Luxembourg, Château d’Urspelt combines historic elegance, contemporary comfort, and a surprising wellness area. Here’s why this getaway is perfect for slowing down.
Three centuries of history and a rebirth
Designated a national monument, Urspelt Castle stands majestically in the heart of the Our Valley. Its origins date back to the 13th century, but the current building dates from the 18th century. During World War II, it served successively as a command post and a field hospital, before being abandoned and overrun by vegetation. Fortunately, the castle was restored to its former glory in 2008 thanks to a monumental restoration project led by Freddy Lodomez and a team of passionate artisans. Today, every stone seems to tell the story of its rescue.
Rooms, grounds, and Luxembourg-style charm
Behind its immaculate façade, the château features 57 subtly decorated rooms and suites: period furniture, soft hues, and subdued lighting. The estate spans a 20,000-square-meter private park with a paved courtyard, an orchard, a fountain, and a renovated historic farmhouse that houses the gourmet restaurant. In the fall, the trees are adorned with warm colors, and the valley’s tranquility invites you to take a stroll or simply relax. The setting becomes nothing short of cinematic!
The cave spa: a surprise and an immersive relaxation experience
The truly unique feature? A one-of-a-kind cave pool, carved into the rock and bathed in soft light. This 800 m² NUXE® spa also features hammams, private saunas, a hot tub, and a relaxation room. Admission costs €60, but it’s complimentary if you book a treatment. On your way out, a drink at the castle’s secret bar extends the experience. Understated luxury, nature, and a touch of mystery: the perfect combination for a fall weekend for two!
