Just an hour from Brussels, a thousand-year-old abbey awaits you. Founded by a reformed bandit, ravaged by the French Revolutionaries, and yet still standing… or almost. Aulne Abbey, nestled in the Sambre Valley in Hainaut, is one of those places that speaks volumes without saying a word. Here’s why this is the nature road trip you never planned!
1,300 years of history in stone
It all began in 657. Landelin, a reformed bandit, planted a cross in an alder grove and founded a Benedictine monastery. The abbey became Cistercian in 1147. From then on, affiliated with the Order of Clairvaux, it enjoyed exceptional prominence until the 18th century, its golden age. Then came 1794: the French revolutionaries looted, burned, and ravaged the site—including the library. What remains is now listed as a Major Heritage Site of Wallonia. As you stroll among the blue stone colonnades of the abbey farm and the ancient fishponds fed by an ingenious underground hydraulic system, you can appreciate the grandeur of what this place once was.
A stroll through the Valley of Peace

While the ruins command silence, the trails invite you to wander. Two marked hikes (5.9 to 7.2 km), recognized by the Pays des Lacs Tourist Office, wind through woods, fields, and ruins. An audio guide provided at the entrance recounts the daily life of the Cistercian monks, while educational panels mark the route. The landscaped garden, open since 2009, adds a welcome bucolic touch with its variety of flowers. For hiking enthusiasts, the “19 Hikes in the Pays des Lacs” booklet is available on site for €7.
After the effort, the open-air cafés
The Abbey of Aulne may be a place of contemplation, but it doesn’t take itself so seriously as to shy away from good cheer. Nearby, open-air cafés, a mini-golf course, and boat rides on the Sambre await visitors to extend the day in festive style. In July, the Juillet Musical d’Aulne transforms the ruins into an open-air stage. A place where history meets la dolce vita, just a stone’s throw from home—what could be better?
