If you’re a Brussels gourmet and a lover of American culture, this is the place for you. We’ve unearthed the culinary excess you’re going to have to indulge in this winter (and all year round, in fact). At Elbow Lunch Counter, in Brussels, you can sit down inside a real American deli to sample Philly Cheesesteak and other tasty dishes from the States. Bon appétit!
Philly Cheesesteak, a tasty sandwich from Philadelphia
It’s hard not to think of American films from the 70s when you first walk into Elbow Lunch Counter on rue de la Paix in Brussels. Just a stone’s throw from Porte de Namur, this genuine American-style deli takes you on a journey to the USA, both in terms of cuisine and atmosphere.
We take our seats directly at the counter (12-15 seats, so takeaway or be patient). We’re quickly brought two bowls of chips, fresh water with a lemon that arrives as if from a typical American fast-food refill. With this, a dish containing a rather mild tomato sauce to accompany the sandwich.
We ordered the Philly Cheesesteak, one of the house specialties along with the Pastrami and Pastrami Reuben (already sold out that day). Born in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), from which it takes its name, the Philly Cheesesteak is served hot and consists of a thick loaf of bread cut in half, in which we find sliced beef, yellow onion, mayo sauce and, of course, provolone, a delicious Italian cheese!
Perhaps the junk-food naysayers will cry war. Nevertheless, this Philly Cheesesteak is an absolute delight! The bread is as soft as ever, the meat (imported from the U.S., yes, yes!) is cooked just right, and the provolone makes it all the more melt-in-your-mouth. We’re in for a real treat, and we’d love to take some home with us!
On the go, to try something new, or even after a night out, we know we’ll be coming back to Elbow Lunch Counter for a good meal.
