Karreveld Castle: a Renaissance gem at the gates of the city
Far from the urban hustle and bustle of Brussels, Karreveld Castle stands as a veritable time capsule in the heart of Molenbeek. An architectural treasure inspired by the Flemish Renaissance style, this former noble residence built of red brick pays homage to the most beautiful castles in Belgium’s heritage. Set on a pond that reflects the majestic curves of the building, the Karreveld estate is surrounded by a park enhanced by its dense vegetation.

But beyond its fairytale appearance, the site is also famous for its rich history. First mentioned in the 13th century, Karreveld Castle has been telling a story that has been constantly evolving for many centuries. Donated by the Duke of Brabant to his wife in 1270, it served as a pleasure residence for Spanish lords in the 17th century, then as a velodrome, and finally as a film studio. This place with a thousand lives has been constantly changing, in step with the city it inhabits.
A cultural epicenter in the heart of Molenbeek
However, the Karreveld Castle almost fell into oblivion. At the end of the Second World War, the building had become a pile of ruins ready to collapse. At that time, two factions were fighting over the future of the estate: on the one hand, there was a desire to preserve this iconic piece of the country’s heritage, and on the other, the temptation to make way for urban development projects. Fortunately, the estate’s classification by the Commission for Monuments and Sites in 1955 saved the castle from certain destruction.
Under the impetus of Mayor Edmond Machtens, a prominent figure in the municipality of Molenbeek, Karreveld Castle underwent a spectacular transformation, from barn to former chapel. In addition, a French-style garden was designed and inaugurated with the building in 1958, symbolizing a key victory for heritage. Since then, Karreveld has established itself as the beating heart of local life. A privileged setting for the city’s political life, but also for weddings, exhibitions, acoustic concerts and popular celebrations, the castle proves its ability to maintain its status as an indispensable part of the capital on a daily basis.
