From the 17th Century to the Maison du Spectacle: The Miraculous Journey of an Exceptional Mansion
Built between 1697 and 1708, La Bellone’s remarkable façade is the work of Jean Cosyn, famous for his contributions to Brussels’ Grand-Place. The building captivates with its ingenious balance between the rigor of a classical structure andthe decorative exuberance of Flemish Baroque, offering a setting of great artistic value. Miraculously preserved from the ravages of time, the building began its cultural transformation at the initiative of painter and set designer Serge Creuz, becoming a premier venue dedicated to the performing arts.
To protect this masterpiece from the elements, a contemporary architectural marvel was unveiled in 1995. The project’s designers conceived a stunning 300 m² canopy of glass and stainless steel, utilizing the principle of a faceted vault composed of bent stainless steel rods that envelops the courtyard without exerting any pressure on the historic structures. This protective and luminous shell now shields the historic facade while providing a versatile space sheltered from the elements.
