Nestled in the heart of Hainaut, the Domaine de Mariemont is a must-see destination just one hour from the capital. Recently recognized by the European Heritage Label, this former 16th-century royal estate, now a showcase for memory and discovery, invites visitors to escape from it all. Between a visit to the museum and its unique exhibitions and a contemplative stroll through the 45-hectare park, Mariemont promises a unique getaway in an iconic Belgian heritage site. Let yourself be tempted by the charm of a cultural site that symbolizes the country’s history and art of living.
The legacy of Mariemont: a historical footprint in the heart of Europe
It all began in 1546 when Mary of Hungary, sister of Charles V, decided to have a residence built in her name. The Mariemont Estate was thus created in Morlanwelz, in the province of Hainaut. The site then began its reign over many centuries, between French, Spanish, and Austrian periods, until its reconstruction in the 18th century. Mariemont was then completely modernized under the will of Charles-Alexandre de Lorraine and now boasts a neoclassical style, with French-style gardens and a sublime orangery.
However, the future of the Mariemont estate gradually darkened until it was left in ruins and put up for sale. Its fate quickly improved when the castle was bought by brothers Isidore and Nicolas Warocqué, two industrialists from the region. This marked a true resurrection for the site, which once again began to shine and establish itself in the modern landscape of the country, not only through its commercial activity but also through its unique architectural elegance, designed by Leopold I’s architect, Tilman-François Suys.
A living cultural setting between masterpieces and leisurely strolls
Even today, the Domaine de Mariemont remains a privileged escape from time, with its 45 hectares of greenery entirely surrounded by ramparts. Designed as a 19th-century English-style garden, the Parc de Mariemont is a veritable open-air museum, featuring works of art, majestic nature, archaeological remains, and historic monuments. It is an ideal bucolic setting to illustrate the site’s breathtaking heritage, bequeathed by collector Raoul Warocqué after his many trips abroad.

This heritage can also be discovered in the Mariemont Museum, the jewel of the estate, which houses treasures from all over the world, ranging from Egyptian antiquities to Tournai porcelain. This vibrant building currently offers a number of unique exhibitions and innovative creative workshops, allowing the site to maintain its status as a cultural epicenter, less than an hour from Brussels. It is a major international reference that preserves the soul of a royal residence that is welcoming and warm to every visitor.
