Charming half-timbered houses, gray roofs reflected in the lapping river, flowers on every balcony and the precious calm of a picturesque village… it’ s impossible to resist the charm of Montjoie (in German, Monschau). Situated on the border between Belgium and Germany, this commune evokes the enchanting landscapes of Annecy or Colmar (France).
Montjoie: a little-known gem just 2 hours from Brussels
Located around thirty kilometers south of Aachen (and a 2-hour drive from Brussels), the village of Montjoie is the perfect getaway for lovers of little-known places with enchanting charm. Its name, evocative of happiness (“Mont de la joie” or “Mons gaudii” in Latin), perfectly reflects its enchanting, postcard-perfect allure.
Stroll along the banks of its river, the Roer, and lose yourself in the narrow streets of its Old Town. Here you’ll find designer boutiques, antique dealers, cafés, small museums and art galleries. Climb to the top of the Kierberg, the city’s hill, where you can enjoy a remarkable view of the Castle of the Dukes of Juliers (Burg) de Montjoie. You can visit it once you’ve crossed the riverbank. On the way back up to the Langer Pfad, stop off at Panoramaweg for a spectacular panorama of the whole city.
Spared the fighting and bombing of the Second World War, Montjoie has retained all its ancestral charm. And it has nothing to envy of its neighbor Aachen, better known to tourists. Its historic center is a veritable journey back to the heart of the 18th century. The drive to the village through the Eifel Nature Park makes the journey even more interesting. From Brussels, you can also take the train to Eupen and then the TEC 385 bus to Montjoie (note that it only runs at weekends and on public holidays). At Christmas, don’t miss the splendid Christmas Market. Enjoy your trip!
