To mark its 35th anniversary, Nausicaá is celebrating more than three decades of passion and commitment to the planet. 35 years of commitment to the ocean: the history and mission of Nausicaá
Opened in 1991 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Nausicaá quickly established itself as a pillar of sustainable tourism on the Opal Coast. Over the past 35 years, the National Center for the Sea has welcomed more than 20 million visitors, including 5 million schoolchildren, shaping a true “Ocean Generation ” that is aware of environmental issues. Recognized byUNESCO as early as 1999, the center is now home to 58,000 animals and 1,600 species across 10,000 m² of exhibition space, combining visual wonder with scientific education.
A true “mission-driven aquarium,” Nausicaá goes far beyond the scope of a traditional tourist attraction. The institution actively participates in numerous captive breeding programs and supports conservation projects around the world. Represented at international summits, the center gives voice tothe ocean at the highest levels. Through its rigorous CSR approach and its support for the local economy, Nausicaá has been proving for more than three decades that a healthy ocean is the key to meeting tomorrow’s challenges.
A unique journey into the heart of Europe’s largest aquarium
To celebrate its 35th anniversary, Nausicaá is enriching its visitor experience with the arrival of new iconic residents. In the Open Ocean tank, two gray sharks have taken up residence, while the “Shores and People” exhibition now features a female octopus (Octopus vulgaris), renowned for her intelligence and fascinating camouflage abilities. In addition, two new themed guided tours are now available, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the crucial role sharks and rays play in maintaining the balance of the oceans.
The experience continues with a total immersion in the daily life of the National Center for the Sea. Visitors can follow “In the Footsteps of a Caretaker,” go behind the scenes during workshops for children ages 8 and up, or explore the brand-new “Tropical Escape” exhibition. Frombehind-the-scenes exploration to gourmet dining experiences showcasing local seafood, this anniversary offers the perfect opportunity to rediscover all the magic of Europe’s largest aquarium.
