Notre-Dame à la Rose: the fabulous history of the Hôtel-Dieu in Lessines
The origins of this unique place date back to the 13th century, born of devotion and a vow made in war. As the heiress of Lord Arnould IV of Oudenaarde, Alix de Rosoit chose to invest in the founding of a hospital for the poor. Established according to the Rule of St. Augustine, the hospital operated entirely self-sufficiently thanks to vast land donations and an adjoining 17th-century farm. The community produced its own food to provide for the sisters and the sick, forming a true citadel of charity.
Architecturally speaking, the site is a stylistic marvel. Unlike traditional open structures, the Lessines cloister—whose construction spanned nearly four centuries—is unique in that it is enclosed by large stained-glass windows, creating a space for prayer and meditation completely isolated from the outside world. Despite the French Revolution, a childlike resistance took root in local memory, with children playing pranks to blind officials and prevent them from removing the cross from the bell tower.
Unusual treasures and secret gardens: the experience of a timeless museum
Today, the site stands out as an exceptional museum space where time seems to have stood still. The preserved collections recreatethe intimate atmosphere of the convent: visitors discover Gothic furniture unique in Belgium, rich gold and silverware, and surprising works of art.
