“Speaky-what? A speakeasy is a type of American bar often considered clandestine, as it was particularly common during Prohibition (the American period when the sale of alcohol was banned in the USA).
Long after this ban (and at a time when some people are counting their benders by the hundreds – no, we’re not judging you), many bars in the same style, inspired by 1920s-30s decor, opened in Brussels. Although easily accessible, today’s bars perpetuate the idea of being secretive, confidential and hidden… That was without counting on our work…
1. Edgar’s Flavors
Named after the famous author Edgar Allen Poe, Edgar’s Flavors is a magnificent speakeasy featuring tequila and mezcal spirits. Take a look at its pretty counter and tapestry!
📍 Address: Rue de la Concorde 63
2. Marcelle
Some will say this is one of the capital’s best cocktail bars; others will praise its cozy, jazzy atmosphere. In our opinion, Marcelle remains one of the best speakeasies in Brussels.
📍 Address: Pl. du Samedi 15
3. Arthur Orlans
When a former couture shop is transformed into a bar, the result is Arthur Orlans, a friendly speakeasy on Rue Antoine Dansaert. Carefully-crafted cocktails await you in a cozy, softly-lit setting.
📍 Address: Rue Antoine Dansaert 67
4. Plumette
Bathed in a 20’s atmosphere, Plumette is a splendid speakeasy where you can sip delicious cocktails with friends. You can even try (or not) their “Tord-Boyaux”, tequila infused with coriander!
📍 Address: Rue de l’Epée 26
5. Confessions
Confessions is the new kid on the block. Open since last year, it’s a real American-style speakaesy… Walking in, you’d think you’d been transported back to the Prohibition era, when things were done under the cloak and everyone seemed to want to go incognito. In fact, the name of the bar, “Confessions”, refers to secrets… Perhaps the ones that will soon be confessed over the sophisticated cocktails you’ll be served?
