Among the secret places in Brussels, this one is often overlooked. Yet the Stockel metro station is well worth a visit: it’s the only one in the world decorated by Hergé himself. A giant fresco, 135 characters, and a plunge into the world of Tintin… at the end of line 1.
The world’s only fresco by Hergé
A quietterminus in the east of the capital, Stockel could pass unnoticed… except that on its platforms, a giant comic strip awaits you. Conceived by Hergé shortly before his death and painted by Studios Hergé, this monumental fresco brings together all the emblematic characters from the Tintin universe . A total of 135 characters are hidden on the walls of Stockel. Will you be able to find them?
It’s a veritable underground museum, free of charge and accessible with just a metro ticket .
Since August 2025, the station has been the subject of a major renovation project, aimed at refreshing the surfaces, improving signage and enhancing accessibility for all users. The emblematic fresco is also benefiting from meticulous cleaning to restore it to its former glory, without altering the original work.
Stockel: an unusual station to add to your list of must-sees in Brussels
