Looking for a cultural getaway that combines history and architecture without straying too far from Brussels? Then look no further! Located on Monseigneur Ladeuzeplein, the Bibliothèque Universitaire de Louvain is the place for you. Getting there couldn’t be easier: Leuven is only 25 minutes by train from the capital.
Once there, you’ll discover a landmark that was rebuilt thanks to international solidarity, after being destroyed in the two world wars. Push open the door of this Art Deco building, which is open to the public at weekends, and prepare to be amazed by its large reading room.
Leuven University Library: the neo-Renaissance story of a building that rose from the ashes
Behind its majestic exterior lies a tale of destruction and reconstruction. Today’s Leuven University Library is the fruit of a worldwide effort. After the old library was burnt down by the Germans in 1914, people in high places were quick to mobilize. American architect Whitney Warren was entrusted with the design, delivering this Flemish neo-Renaissance masterpiece in 1928.

The building is crowned by an imposing carillon tower. Inspired by the Giralda in Seville, the tower is not just a decorative element. It offers a spectacular panoramic view over the rooftops of the city of Leuven. A visit here will reveal the rich history of the prestigious KU Leuven, one of Europe’s oldest universities.
An Art Deco interior of rare elegance
But above all, the real coup de coeur lies inside. Forget images of austere libraries. The great reading room is a marvel of sumptuous Art Deco architecture. After the second fire in 1940, architect Henry Lacoste oversaw the renovation of this room. His aim was to create a unique ambience. The woodwork is made from American oak of exceptional quality.

Let’s not forget that this is a library. The students who concentrate here are surrounded by thousands of books and an incredibly warm atmosphere. However, to preserve the quiet of the premises during the week, access is restricted. So, if you want to fully immerse yourself in this unique atmosphere and admire the elegance of the hall, plan your visit for a Saturday or Sunday. It’s the perfect time to discover Leuven’s hidden heritage!
