At the heart of Belgium’s historical heritage and industrial genius, the Val Saint-Lambert site in Seraing is one of the country’s must-see attractions. On this almost thousand-year-old land, the past of the former Cistercian abbey gave way, at the beginning of the 19th century, to a world-renowned crystal temple and its unique works. A domain which, beyond its activity and its museum, stands as the guardian of supreme elegance. Between the cozy and gourmet salons of its majestic castle and the green setting of the Bois du Val Saint-Lambert, this Walloon hamlet in the province of Liège offers a timeless cultural getaway.
From Cistercian heritage to crystal museum: the soul of Val Saint-Lambert
The incredible history of Val Saint-Lambert began in 1202, in the middle of the Middle Ages, when monks of the Cistercian order settled in this abbey. Targeted by numerous fires and looting over the centuries, the building was then dismantled during the French Revolution, leaving only tiny traces of the building’s religious and sovereign past. However, the abbey’s tragic fate was turned around in December 1825, when five glassmakers bought the site to set up a crystal factory.

Today, the Val Saint-Lambert crystal factory continues to operate and is one of the largest in the world. A true symbol of the region, the former abbey has also been transformed into a unique immersive museum. Visitors are transported on a journey combining heritage, creativity, and working-class history, offering a sublime contrast between monastic architecture and the delicacy of crystal. In total, more than 250 works illustrate two centuries of authentic expertise, paying tribute to craftsmanship and local tradition.
Prestigious salons, lush greenery, and gourmet pleasures: life at the Château du Val
