What do eels au vert, Bicky Burger and couques de Dinant have in common? They’re classics of our gastronomy… but also, according to TasteAtlas, some of Belgium’s worst culinary specialties! So, are our typical dishes really that bad, or is the verdict too harsh? Here’s our ranking of the worst Belgian dishes, whether we like it or not !
1. Eels in green sauce
Eels au vert, also known as eels à la vert-pré, is a traditional dish from Flanders. It consists of eels cooked in a green sauce based on aromatic herbs, mainly spinach and parsley. According to Taste Atlas (a Croatian culinary guide), it’s the worst Belgian dish… Agree to disagree.

2. The Bicky burger
The Bicky burger is a Belgian burger (also popular in the Netherlands) consisting of a bun topped with sesame seeds and filled with a fried patty made from a combination of pork, chicken and horse meat. We really couldn’t understand why this dish was considered the second worst in Belgium, though…

3. La couque de dinant
Tied with the Bicky Burger, the Couque de Dinant is the third worst Belgian dish according to TasteAtlas! This hard cookie made from honey and wheat flour clearly failed to win over the Croatian jury… Too bad for you!

Is fricadelle from the Netherlands or Belgium? This meat sausage, well known in local French fry shops, is a hit in Belgium, but the concept doesn’t seem to be catching on internationally…

5 . Vitoulet
Vitoulet is a Belgian meatball generally made with ground pork, ground veal, bread, milk, eggs, shallots and parsley. They can be eaten hot or cold, with or without sauce, and are usually accompanied by potatoes and a fresh salad. We love them!
