Flower season is here! Whether you’re heading to Floralia to admire the tulips, to the Château de Coloma for its roses or to the mythical Bois de Hal for the blooming hyacinths, there’s one place that’s just as delightful in springtime, yet less well known to Belgians: the Bois de la Houssière. We tell you all about this springtime treasure on the outskirts of Brussels!
Bois de la Houssière: a bucolic getaway 1 hour from Brussels
Some fifty kilometers from Brussels lies a truly unspoilt haven of peace: the Bois de la Houssière. This forest, located between the villages of Henripont, Ronquières and Virginal, offers city dwellers an ideal natural escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Nestled in the rolling Hainaut landscape, Bois de la Houssière covers 650 hectares. Offering a vast territory to explore for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts, its main charm lies in the beauty of its hyacinths between April and May.
Less well known, and therefore less frequented than the Bois de Hal, the Bois de la Houssière offers a bucolic escape from the noise of the city, amidst flowers of blue, mauve and violet. So if you’ve been dreaming of a flower-filled yet unspoilt getaway, now’s the time!
A wood classified Natura 2000
Classified as a “Natura 2000” site, which brings together European natural sites of great heritage value thanks to their exceptional flora and fauna, Bois de la Houssière offers birdwatchers and budding botanists alike the chance to admire a wide variety of birds, plants and wild flowers.
It’s an ideal outing for everyone, and especially for families, whose children can enjoy the great outdoors and relax in the picnic areas!
