A manifesto of glass and brick: BRUSK’s visionary architecture
Designed by the architectural firms Robbrecht & Daem and Olivier Salens, the BRUSK building is a feat of urban integration in the heart of Bruges. This art center draws inspiration from traditional brickwork and the surrounding canals. Its dark green glass facades, beyond their distinctive aesthetic, generate renewable energy. The site breaks with the rigidity of traditional museums: its monumental exhibition halls, perched on the first floor beneath 13.5-meter-high ceilings, are bathed in unique natural light streaming in from the north.
The ground floor, entirely open to the public across 2,500 m², unfolds as an extension of public space. Here, visitors discover the lively Forum,the Aula dedicated to conferences, and the Bar Brusk. But the true heart of the building remains the “Scala,” a majestic central stairwell named in homage to 13th-century Italian merchants. This space is home to artist Laure Prouvost’s first permanent mural: *The Whispering Walls Rêve*, an eccentric 350 m² collage that masterfully adorns the walls of the enclosure.
Dialogue Across the Centuries: When the Flemish Primitives Meet Artificial Intelligence
For its official opening in May 2026, BRUSK is making a bold statement by orchestrating an unprecedented encounter across time through two major inaugural exhibitions. The first, titled “Vision Large,” explores the city’s glorious past between 900 and 1550. Thanks to exceptional loans from London and the Vatican Library, more than 250 precious works and documents have been brought together for this exhibition. As they wander through the galleries, visitors can admire the famous portrait of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, which magnificently illustrates the golden age of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
At the other end of the creative spectrum, the Latent City exhibition propels the institution into the future by spotlighting the work of artist Refik Anadol, a global pioneer of AI-generated art. This bold juxtaposition of traditional paintings and algorithmic pixels lays the foundation for BRUSK’s identity: a dynamic interdisciplinary hub where the visual arts are enriched by dance, theater, and music performances.
