From the 19th Century to Outremeuse: The Evolution of a Major Artistic Institution
Founded in 1890,the École Supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc de Liège was established with a clear mission: to train rigorous and open-minded artists specializing in the arts and crafts. Initially located on Rue Sainte-Marie starting in 1899, the institution welcomed its first students to new facilities in 1908. Over the decades, the school enjoyed growing success.Its educational offerings diversified and gradually took shape, encompassing secondary education, higher education, and adult education.
The turning point came inthe year 2000:ESA Saint-Luc and the Institut Supérieur d’Architecture jointly relocated to the heart of the Outremeuse neighborhood. They took up residence inthe former Cavalier Fonck barracks, a vast military complex decommissioned in 1998 and fully renovated for educational purposes. This historic move allowed the school to bring its fine arts and visual arts programs together on a single campus, while reconnecting with its original roots, located just a few streets away from where the first classes were held in the late 19th century.
From medieval priory to art campus: the unique architecture of Saint-Luc
The ESA Saint-Luc’s location inthe former Fonck barracks provides an architectural setting of exceptional rarity. Built on the site of a priory founded in the 13th century, the site preserves the magnificent 14th-century chapter house, with its six Gothic tuffeau ribbed vaults, now converted into an exhibition space. Over the centuries, the site has undergone a transformation: the convent was fitted with a monumental staircase in the 18th century before being converted into a barracks in the 19th century. Charming Neo-Renaissance sculptures, repositioned within the green spaces, complete this unique heritage landscape.
Beyond its history, this campus forms a true “city within a city ” where more than 2,500 students come together. The spacious facilities house state-of-the-art equipment, including studios for screen printing, engraving, painting, design, and sculpture.
