A number of localities within easy reach of Brussels offer an ideal getaway with fields of fruit ready to be picked. This family activity not only allows you to enjoy fresh, delicious fruit, but also to spend quality time together as a family, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Bruxelles Secrète has unearthed 3 must-see places for fantastic fruit-picking!
PlukPlek
Fruit isn’t the only thing on offer at Plukplek! In fact, as well as being able to pick a huge variety of fruit here, you can also harvest vegetables! On the fruit side, there are yellow, red and black raspberries, taybes (an aromatic cross between blackberries and raspberries), redcurrants, blackcurrants, rhubarb… The choice of vegetables is not to be outdone, and you’ll have the choice of leaving with mangetout beans, zucchinis, lettuce, rocket or fennel! And aromatic herbs like parsley and coriander! And that’s not to mention the delicious jams made on the premises. But don’t forget to check out their website to see how picking works and the list of things to bring. Are you already thinking of your own recipes?

La Finca
We agree, La Finca is a little farther from Brussels than the previous two, but a trip to this little market-garden farm in Wezembeek-Oppem is well worth it. As well as letting us take part in the fruit picking several Sundays a month in summer, all sorts of educational activities are offered to make children (aged 5 and over) aware of agriculture and its virtues. For example, they learn about organic market gardening, beekeeping and sheep farming.
Every morning, the children also help the team with farm chores (harvesting fruit/vegetables, preparing seedlings, caring for the animals, etc.) and discover in a playful way all the animals that populate the vegetable garden or the importance of bees. They can also confidently answer questions such as: “Why is water vital for all living things? What more could you ask for?
