This summer, Overijse is bringing its IJsestrand back into the spotlight! A pop-up beach set up on the shores of the IJsevijver! Come lay out your towel, dip your toes in the water, and enjoy a summer getaway near Brussels. From June 24 to August 9, 2026, this little sandy retreat welcomes visitors, families, and groups of friends every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
A vacation vibe without leaving the Brussels region
The setting has all the makings of a mini-getaway. Sand between your toes, an open view of the pond, and that pleasant feeling of having left the city for an afternoon. IJsestrand is set up next to the IJsevijver to offer a simple, friendly space where people come as much to relax as to enjoy the sunny days.
What’s on the agenda? An impromptu picnic, reading in the sun, family games, or a refreshing break by the water. Visitors are invited to bring their own beach gear. Think towels, folding chairs, games, and snacks—to create their ideal day, just like a beach vacation.

Swimming should also be possible in the designated area. However, this is subject to compliance with water quality standards. One small detail to keep in mind before taking the plunge, though… The area is unsupervised, and water shoes are required. Swimming is also restricted to people over the age of eight.
Lively Sundays filled with sports, games, and activities by the water
But IJsestrand isn’t just about relaxation. Every Sunday, the beach hosts free sports and recreational activities! We’ll be unveiling the detailed 2026 activity schedule soon, but the idea remains the same: enjoy the water, get active, try new activities, and share a fun time together.
The atmosphere promises to be family-friendly and laid-back, with that unique blend that’s so sought-after these days… An easily accessible spot, free of charge, and just exotic enough to make you feel like you’ve gotten away for a few hours.
Please note, however! Events and activities may be modified or canceled depending on the weather or water quality conditions.
The new refreshing summer getaway to try near Brussels
With its temporary sand, potential swimming, and waterside open-air café vibe, IJsestrand checks all the boxes for an easy summer outing. No need for a car to cross the country, no need for complicated planning— just a desire for sunshine and a few free hours ahead of you.
Halfway between an urban beach and a nature getaway, this spot in Overijse stands out as one of the little surprises of summer 2026 for those looking for a change of scenery without going too far.
