From scientific greenhouse to cultural center: the wild history of Le Botanique
Inaugurated on September 1, 1829, on the outskirts of the capital, the Botanical Garden was born out of the desire of enthusiasts eager to create a new haven of greenery. The building features sublime architecture of glass and iron, flanked by a majestic rotunda. For more than half a century, this exceptional site enjoyed its scientific golden age under the auspices of the government, which acquired it in 1870. But Brussels’ relentless growth sealed the fate of the botanical collections: on the eve of World War II, the plants were moved to Meise.
Threatened by the city’s frenetic development, the building was on the verge of abandonment for four decades. Its salvation came in the late 1970s when the French Community took over the listed site to reinvent its destiny. After being renovated,the former horticultural complex reopened its doors in 1984 under the name “Le Botanique.” Transformed into an innovative cultural center, “Bota” has preserved its most beautiful botanical and architectural features to becomeone of Belgium’s most vibrant spaces for art and community gatherings.
From Nuits Botanique to exceptional exhibitions: the beating heart of creativity
For over forty years, Le Botanique has established itself as one of Belgium’s most active and well-attended venues. Each year, the institution hosts nearly 400 concerts and about ten visual or contemporary art exhibitions. From the unmissable spring event, the Nuits Botanique, to the intimate stages of the Rotonde, theOrangerie, or the Museum, the “Bota” has forged a reputation as an unparalleled trailblazer. The new program confirms this ambition to combine artistic excellence with new discoveries. For the start of the season, the venue is spotlighting the Belgian scene through a wave of new releases and debut projects, while also hosting international figures with strong personalities. On September 5, 2026, La Rotonde will come alive to the electropop sounds of French artist Cannelle, then, on September 10, the Museum will celebrate Rachel Chinouriri, a rising star of British pop, with an exceptional concert. With big names, thought-provoking exhibitions, and the rising stars of tomorrow, Le Botanique remains a living laboratory of contemporary creation.
