Located a stone’s throw from the Grand-Place, the Théâtre Royal de Toone is a cultural treasure trove unique in Brussels, and indeed in Europe! In fact, it has been entirely dedicated to puppetry since the 19th century! Nestled in a picturesque former guild house, it offers captivating performances of classic tales and local legends. Bruxelles Secrète tells you all about it.
A Théàtre like no other
The Théâtre Royal de Toone is a Brussels institution par excellence. Indeed, it dates back to the 19th century, when a passionate puppeteer named Antoine “Toone” Genty began wowing crowds with his shows. Passed down from generation to generation, the theater has retained its old-fashioned charm while renewing itself. Today, the eighth incarnation of Toone is at the helm, perpetuating a unique family and artistic tradition.
Inside the building, which dates back to 1696, the Théâtre de Toone invites you to discover puppet shows. These revive classic tales and local legends. Each show, performed with glove puppets, is a spellbinding blend of humor, drama and folklore. The beautifully sculpted and costumed puppets come to life under the expert hands of the puppeteers, creating an immersive and unforgettable theatrical experience. Young and old alike will be charmed!
Have a drink in a tercentenary estaminet? It’s possible here!
But the Théâtre de Toone doesn’t just offer shows! It’s also home to a tercentenary estaminet, where time seems to have stood still. This warm, authentic café is the ideal place to sip a Belgian craft beer after a performance. With its wooden walls and old theater posters, the estaminet exudes a friendly, timeless atmosphere.
Whether you’re a theater fan, a history buff or simply looking for a unique cultural experience in Brussels, the Théâtre Royal de Toone is a must-see. Immerse yourself in the magical world of puppetry and let yourself be charmed by this traditional showcase in the heart of our city.
