Forget the conventional abbey tour! As part of the Journées du Patrimoine, Maredret Abbey is stepping out of its monastic silence to invite visitors to a rare and surprising immersion. Between neo-Gothic heritage, lively workshops and culinary discoveries, September 13 and 14 offer a unique interlude, where history can be savored as much as admired.
When heritage comes to life
Founded at the end of the 19th century, Maredret Abbey’s neo-Gothic architecture is initially impressive, but its open doors reveal all its vitality! For a weekend, visitors are invited to step inside the cloister. Medieval illuminations come to life with captivating demonstrations. Then, the aromatic plant gardens open up like an open-air book. And lectures explore ancient knowledge that is still surprisingly relevant today. Far from a simple museum tour, the experience becomes one of immersion, passionately unveiling the history and spirit of this community.
Crafts, delicacies and medieval inspiration
Beyond the stones and stained glass windows, the abbey is transformed into a veritable crossroads of flavors and know-how. A market of local artisans will be set up in the monastery grounds. On offer will be a gourmet range of products, from sourdough bread to fragrant herbal teas, as well as local cheeses and charcuterie. To extend the experience, a meal inspired by Saint Hildegard is even served at the table d’hôtes! You’ll be able to rediscover a reinvented medieval cuisine, but please note that reservations are essential.
The feminine art of brewing
It’s hard to leave Maredret without mentioning its most singular project! It’s a range of beers brewed by nuns. True to the motto “ora et labora”, the nuns have reinvented the brewing tradition by incorporating plants from their own garden. Altus, Triplus and the brand-new Extra are no mere abbey beers… They are living creations, at the crossroads of innovation and monastic memory. With their floral, spicy and surprising notes, they perfectly embody the spirit of the place. Between spirituality and conviviality, to raise a glass at Maredret is to toast an ever-changing history. Chin chin!
