In the heart of old Brussels, a stone’s throw from the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert and the Grand-Place, À la Mort Subite continues to stir the soul of the Belgian capital. Here, time seems to stand still. Patinated mirrors, period light fittings and old-fashioned woodwork give every corner an almost theatrical atmosphere, where curious tourists and native Bruxellois mingle .
A journey through time
Founded in 1928 by Théophile Vossen, À la Mort Subite is nestled in rue Montagne-aux-Herbes Potagères, a stone’s throw from Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert. And the café’s name has a history as original as its décor! It dates back to 1910, when Théophile Vossen ran an establishment called La Cour Royale. The regulars, often National Bank employees, played a dice game called “pitjesbak”, now known as “421”. The aim was to complete the game in a single throw. The player who lost was nicknamed “the dead man”, and fast games were called “sudden deaths”. The term soon became part of everyday customer parlance, so much so that Vossen eventually renamed his café “À la Mort Subite”!
But the story doesn’t end there: he later gave the same name to the famous beer he produced in his brewery on rue des Capucins, thus perpetuating the legend of the coffee and the drink.
A preserved Art Nouveau decor
More than just a café, the establishment (listed since 1998) is a veritable living museum of Brussels Art Nouveau. Walls adorned with patinated mirrors, period chandeliers, finely carved woodwork and decorative garlands create a unique atmosphere. Jacques Brel, as well as many other artists, writers and actors, were regulars, coming here for a coffee, a beer or simply to watch the world go by. This aura of authenticity, reinforced by the period furniture and intimate table layout, means that every visitor feels instantly transported to the Brussels of the 1920s-30s.
An authentic culinary experience
À la Mort Subite serves typical Belgian sn acks until 1am every day. On the menu: tartines au fromage blanc, omelettes, quiches, and a selection of local cheeses and charcuterie. Beer lovers will appreciate the extensive menu, including, of course, the famous Mort Subite gueuze, as well as other Belgian and international beers. And last but not least, the café is still run by the same Vossen family, who have been carrying on the tradition for four generations.
