More than 900 years of history
The history of KortenbergAbbey dates back to 1095, before Benedictine nuns settled at the current site in 1222. Over the centuries, the abbey has endured fires, reconstructions, and transformations… But above all, it has left its mark on the history of the Duchy of Brabant. In fact, it was here that the famous Charter of Kortenberg was signed in 1312. This charter is considered one of the first texts to limit the sovereign’s power in favor of the people. While the buildings visible today date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries, the estate has retained all its historic character and now serves as a center for reflection and gathering.
A little-known park perfect for a stroll
Today, however, it is the park that attracts most visitors. Open to the public since 2010, it features expansive lawns, majestic century-old trees, a peaceful pond, and numerous benches where visitors can take a break. Several trails lead to the nearby woods, allowing you to extend your walk, while in the summer, the terrace on the grounds invites you to enjoy a drink or a light lunch in a lush, green setting. Far from the crowds, Kortenberg Abbey is one of the most pleasant nature and heritage getaways just outside Brussels.
