A few kilometers from Brussels, a castle with a flamboyant past is preparing for its biggest transformation in four centuries. The Elewijt estate, once the summer retreat of Peter Paul Rubens, is set to be reborn in 2030 as a place where art, gastronomy and history meet. Bruxelles Secrète reveals all about the future of Rubens’ castle!
From Rubens to the 21st century

Built in the 14th century as a fortress, Château d’Elewijt has stood the test of time, reaching its peak in 1635, when Peter Paul Rubens made it his summer residence. In this rural setting, the Baroque master painted. He also entertained friends and savored the Flemish sweetness at the side of his companion Hélène Fourment. Here, every stone still seems to bear the golden light of his paintings.
A park of experiments and a center dedicated to Rubens
Almost 400 years later, the château is preparing for a new chapter. Tourism Flanders plans to turn it into an open-access park, inspired by the landscapes Rubens loved to paint. Inside, an experience center will combine immersive exhibitions, workshops and interactive installations. The opposite wing will be transformed into a modular hall for concerts, conferences and associative events, reviving the spirit of encounters that once animated the site.
Gastronomy, accommodation and local life

The outbuildings will also find a new vocation! The farmhouse will host a brasserie offering dishes inspired by the historic kitchen garden and revisited recipes from the Baroque era. Opposite, the guest house will offer eleven rooms with old-world charm, designed as an invitation to extend the experience. Between the two, a building will be dedicated to local associations and businesses, making the château as much a rallying point as a tourist site. The whole thing is scheduled for completion in 2030 – we can’t wait!
